Chapter Five

When Lucifer got to the farm where the tents were pitched, he was as nervous as a kitten. So much depended on the next few minutes. He saw a small round man who was directing operations, and he went over to him.

“I’m looking for a young man. He has dark skin, he’s tall and thin, and his hair is very long and black. His name is Devil. Is he here?”

Barnabus looked at the stranger. He wasn’t in the robes, and he didn’t look like one of the Brotherhood, but he could be in their pay. The man looked agitated. He had a presence and the air of one who was used to having his own way.

“I’m sorry, sir, he’s not here,” Barnabus said.

The man’s shoulders drooped, and he looked deflated and immeasurably sad. Barnabus felt sorry for him. Just then Luminitsa arrived.

“You’re Lucifer?” she asked.

“Yes I am. How did you know?”

“Devil described you. Come into our caravan. Barnabus was only trying to protect him, by denying all knowledge of him.”

“He’s here then?” Lucifer asked eagerly.

“Come into our caravan. We can’t talk here,” Luminitsa said.

When they were seated with mugs of hot tea in their hands, she handed Lucifer the letter that Devil had left. When he read it, he put his head in his hands and groaned.

“I’ve lost him again!”

“You’ll find him. Do you know why he left you in the first place?”

“No, I’ve cudgelled my brains, but I’m not sure,” Lucifer said.

Luminitsa told him what Devil had overheard.

“It’s as I suspected then. He overheard just that last part of the conversation. I would never have handed him over. I wanted the Brothers to think that I would. I thought that if I seemed to cooperate they wouldn’t be suspicious. I was planning to leave with him the next day. When I worked out the arrangements and went to find him, it was too late.”

“I told him that he should wait and allow you to explain and listen with an open mind, but he was trying to convince himself he’d done the right thing by running away, so he couldn’t admit that maybe he’d made a mistake.”

“Have you any idea where he’s going?” Lucifer asked.

“The only place I can think of is Britain,” Barnabus said.

“That’s because you miss it yourself. There are many other islands,” Luminitsa remarked.

“Barnabus could be right. Devil was always fond of my map book, and one of the places I’ve visited that he loved to hear about was Britain.”

“Well, unless he has papers, he won’t get past the border,” Barnabus said.

“I have his birth certificate and some papers, but he has no passport. There are many ways of getting across the Channel, and unscrupulous men to help him. Then he will be in more trouble than he is in here. I must go and find him.” Lucifer stood up, but Luminitsa took his hand and a faraway look came into her eyes.

“You will find him. It will take time and patience, and you’ll lose him again before you keep him.
